Completed in January 2025 in mixed media on 50x40cm stretched canvas, this painting is a view of The Chantry and The Relais Henley (formerly The Red Lion Hotel) rear courtyard from one of the fire escapes. I wanted to capture the roughness of the old architecture against the contemporary hotel extension. Old timber framing and crumbling render against smooth steel and glass, with the jumble of old roof forms in shadow beyond the extension.
It captures the light of a cold morning in early autumn with the brightness of a low sun breaking through from a stormy sky.
